Simultaneously in many developed nations alongwith formal curricular education open & distance mode of learning as a tool of more flexible kind of education has acquired tremendous popularity and is a well established mode of quality education including higher education in many universities.
India is a democratic nation and since independence has demonstrated to the world that it is a progressive nation willing to adopt the newer and newer technologies and has amply displayed great potential to develop into technically advanced and highly industrious nation having international quality in most of their undertakings. Naturally, Indian universities are collaborating with different international universities of high repute and are signing Memoranda of Understanding to promote opportunities of international education to brilliant Indian students. Faculties of Commerce, Computer Science, Management Science and Law are providing educational programmes under distance mode of learning in addition to regular mode. This development is providing opportunity of education to students belonging to smaller townships, remote villages and underdeveloped rural or semiurban areas.
Hon’ble Chancellor of Bharati Vidyapeeth University, Pune respected Dr. Patangrao Kadam established Bharati Vidyapeeth in1964 with very strong desire to bring about much needed ‘Social Transformation through Dynamic Education’. His resolve to promote education among masses was due to his personal knowledge of hardships a student from rural background especially from socially disadvantaged classes is required to go through while seeking opportunity of education. With his astute leadership and fired by the inspiration from within as well as due to painstaking efforts of his younger brother Hon’ble Dr. Shivajirao Kadam, Vice Chancellor of Bharati Vidyapeeth University, Pune together they have established more than 160 excellent educational institutions since 1964 till this date.
In view of the excellence of infrastructure and in view of unquestionable potential of profound growth of Bharati Vidyapeeth University the University Grant Commission of Government of India granted university status(under the UGC Act, Under Section 3) to 12 of the higher educational institutions of Bharati Vidyapeeth on 26th April, 1996. During last 12 years the University has richly grown into multi campus, multi faculty university to be one of the largest in the country having as many as 32 higher educational institutions undertaking more than 234 different types of educational programmes benefiting lakhs of students with high quality higher education. The present students population is in excess of 15000 and the university has more than 3000 highly qualified professional teaching faculty members. In view of the excellence achieved by the constituent institutions of Bharati Vidyapeeth University, the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) has awarded the most prestigious “A” grade to Bharati Vidyapeeth University and to all its constituent units. It is a matter of pride that the National Accreditation Board (NAB) of AICTE has also awarded highly creditable ‘A’ grade to our technical institutions.
Hon’ble founder and chancellor of Bharati Vidyapeeth Univeristy respected Dr. Patangrao Kadam started conduction of extramural examinations in the subjects of English and Mathematics for students of secondary and higher secondary school. For these examinations students from all over Maharashtra could appear and derive the benefit of developing higher skill in English and Mathematics additional to the regular school curriculum of English and Mathematics. He thought that the students belonging to rural areas because of poor skill in subjects like English and Mathematics are considerably handicapped when they seek better employments. These examinations were started when he founded the educational institution called as Bharati Vidyapeeth in 1964. However, School of Distance Education in Bharati Vidyapeeth University was formally started in the year 2004.
To implement the educational programmes under distance mode of education he selected our own institutions of management located at New Delhi, Mumbai, Pune,Kolhapur, Karad, Sangli, Solapur. These institutions are provided with excellent infrastructure such as computer labs with facility of Internet browsing for the students. Further in these institutions, highly skilled technical and professional teachers are devotedly providing support to the students by way of special counselling sessions, teaching faculty contact sessions, student seminars, group discussions etc. Additionally, there is excellent institution-industry co-ordination whereby students go on industrial visits. They are trained in the industry for developing technical skills as well as they are trained in the field of management of material and manpower resources.
The University conducts the evaluation of the students of distance education periodically by way of home assignments evaluation, project evaluation, practical skill evaluation as well as conducting theory examination twice in a year.
